Pro-life feminism - By: Brian Miller

Pro-life feminism is the opposition to abortion based on feminist ideologies. People who take this viewpoint assert that abortion has harmed women more than it has helped them. Proponents of pro-life feminism also believe that abortion does not empower women; rather it creates a disempowered body in which society profits from the violent act toward women and their offspring. Further, some pro-life feminists believe that abortion unfairly places minority women and poor women at a disadvantage. These women believe that the only way they may achieve success in a society that values the status quo is to have an abortion. Early feminists, such as Susan B. Anthony believed that abortion is an evil imposed on women by men. This was used as a tool by the patriarchal culture to keep women in submission. A major proponent of pro-life feminism is the Feminists for Life organization. A major spokesperson for Feminists for Life is Patricia Heaton from “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

I agree that abortion does not empower women, rather abortion specialists profit from these abortions. I also agree that abortion unfairly places minority women and poor women at a disadvantage because they are more likely to have an abortion. However, I do not agree that abortion was a tool used by men in order to keep women in submission. Abortion was used to give mothers an alternative option to childbirth.
